چکیده

The addition of properly selected elements, coupled in nanoscale multilayer structures can further enhance the properties of TiAlN coatings and bring new high performance. The incorporation of Y in the nanoscale pseudo-superlattice TiAlCrN/TiAlYN with typical period of 1.7 nm not only improves the oxidation resistance but also effectively reduces the coefficient of friction of the coating from 0.9 to 0.65 at temperatures in the range of 850 950 0 C. The adaptation of the tribological properties occurs as a result of the preferential migration of the Y to the column boundaries. TiAlN/VN superlattice can achieve another selfadaptation process. During friction the coatings adapt themselves to the combined thermal and mechanical wear by the formation of highly lubricious vanadiumoxides due to high flash temperatures at the asperity contacts on the surface. The integrity of the bulk of the coating is retained, leading to exceptionally low, for superhard coatings, friction coefficient of 0.5 and a wear coefficient of 2  10 -17 m 3 N -1 m -1 . The coatings have been deposited by the combined steered cathodic arc unbalanced magnetron sputtering method.

High temperature tribological performance of CrAlYN/CrN nanoscale multilayer coatings deposited on γ-TiAl

Nanoscale multilayer nitride coatings deposited by advanced PVD techniques have shown particular promise in improving the tribological properties of a number of modal alloy steels [1]. In this study, we report the effect of temperature on the friction and wear behaviour of a CrAlYN/CrN multilayer coating with a CrAlYON/CrON topcoat deposited on γ-TiAl. Deposition was performed by unbalanced mag...

Tribology and Micromechanics of Chromium Nitride Based Multilayer Coatings on Soft and Hard Substrates

The tribological protection of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites (CFC) is essential for broadening their use from structural to functional applications, e.g., to linear bearings in mechanical engineering. However, their wear resistance in sliding and rolling contacts is low. This work focusses on the possibility of improving their tribological properties by the application of thin hard m...

Tribological behavior of sputter-deposited MoSX/Ni coatings

AbstractSputtered MoS2 coatings have been mostly used as a solid lubricant. In this investigation, MoSx/Ni composite coatings with Ni contents varying from 0 to 22 % were deposited onto steel substrate using a DC magnetron sputter process. The MoS2/Ni ratio in the coatings was controlled by sputtering the composite targets. The composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the...
